Walking & Hiking

Diamond Hill

Embark on a 6.2-kilometre trail through Connemara National Park and experience some of County Galway’s most inspiring mountain scenery. This 2-hour loop takes you along gravel paths, wooden boardwalks, and steps leading up the slopes of Diamond Hill, rewarding your efforts with stunning summit views. From the top, gaze across Connemara’s coastline, including the islands of Inishturk, Inishbofin, Inishark, and the charming Ballynakill Harbour, while the Twelve Bens, Mweelrea, and Tully Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop. Strenuous but deeply satisfying, the walk offers both adventure and breathtaking beauty, and you can round off your journey with a coffee and treat at the park’s café or explore nearby Letterfrack for more local dining delights.

History & Heritage

Kylemore Abbey and Victorian Walled Garden

Kylemore Abbey in Connemara, County Galway, is a place of stunning beauty and rich history. The estate features a Victorian Walled Garden, a neo-Gothic church, and scenic trails, all set against the iconic castle reflected in a lake. Explore its fascinating past through multimedia displays, restored period rooms, and history talks, or enjoy family-friendly experiences like meeting Connemara ponies, Kune Kune pigs, and seeing the Giant’s wishing stone. The Abbey’s cafés serve homemade meals inspired by Victorian recipes, and the Craft & Design Shop offers handmade soaps, chocolates, pottery, and unique Irish gifts, letting you take a taste of Connemara home.

Coastal Escapes

Killary Harbour

Killary Harbour, a stunning 16-kilometre fjord in the heart of Connemara, forms a natural border between Galway and Mayo. One of just three glacial fjords in Ireland, it is framed by Connacht’s highest peak, Mweelrea, the Maumturk Mountains, and the dramatic Twelve Bens. Explore the charming hamlet of Rossroe, where philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein once sought quiet reflection, or walk the historic 9-kilometre Green Road, built during the 19th-century famine relief programme. Along the way, admire the rows of mussel rafts that dot the water and take in some of Ireland’s most breathtaking coastal scenery.

The Great Outdoors

Connemara National Park

Discover the natural beauty of Connemara National Park in County Galway, spanning 3,000 hectares of mountains, bogs, grasslands, and woodlands. Admire the rugged peaks of the Twelve Bens, including Benbaun, Bencullagh, Benbrack, and Muckanaght, and explore trails at your own pace, from gentle walks to challenging hikes. From the summit of Diamond Hill, enjoy sweeping views of Inishbofin, Inishturk, Inishshark, and Kylemore Abbey. Along the way, spot Connemara ponies, red deer, and a variety of birds, and discover historic features such as ruined houses, old sheep pens, and Tobar Mweelin, a former water source for Kylemore Castle. Finish your visit at the Visitor Centre, which offers exhibitions, an audio-visual show, and a seasonal tea room.

The Great Outdoors

Dog’s Bay Beach

Just two miles from Roundstone on the road to Clifden, Co Galway, lie two of Ireland’s most stunning beaches, Gurteen Beach and Dog’s Bay. Back-to-back, they form a tombolo that juts into the Atlantic Ocean. Dog’s Bay is famous for its horseshoe-shaped, mile-long stretch of pure white sand, made from tiny seashell fragments rather than limestone, while Gurteen Beach shares the same pristine shoreline. Both beaches are sheltered, with crystal-clear waters ideal for swimming, windsurfing, and kitesurfing, and their unique sand and rare machair grasslands make the area ecologically and geologically significant. With breathtaking scenery and safe, welcoming waters, these beaches are a must-visit for anyone exploring Connemara.
